Resurrected LAVA Works in Portland Neighborhood

On Saturday October 30th the Louisville Assembly of Vanguard Art or "LAVA" will be throwing its annual unforgettable Halloween Party in the up and coming Portland Neighborhood. Due to fire code trouble and the Fire Marshall LAVA has had to abandon its roots in the LAVA House and move its infamous art/music bashes to another neck of the woods. There will be cover bands paying homage to The Who, Nirvana, Eminem and a mixed set of great eighties jams. The bands will feature members several distinguished local bands. LAVA artists will be creating an atmosphere of 'terror' art and have been preparing the old dilapidated building for a night of Halloween celebration.

LAVA's move from their studio in Germantown was facilitated by a growing relationship with John Mark Owens of the Portland Festival Organization and Portland Now. "We have been in a tight spot for the last several months since the Fire Marshal shut our shows down in our studio and gallery at the LAVA House. This opportunity has been a blessing and we are looking forward to continuing to work with the Portland Festival more in the future," said Aron Conaway, LAVA artist and founding member of the artist collective.

The building on 34th and Northwestern, dubbed "the Dead Church" for Halloween is owned by the Portland Festival and serves as a meeting place for the 'Portland Now!' Neighborhood Association and other local organizations. "This building has sat quietly waiting for years for something to happen in the sanctuary and we see this as a perfect opportunity for LAVA to do something positive in this part of the city. This relationship will directly benefit the community by drawing artists into the neighborhood," said Hallie Jones, another LAVA artist.

LAVA has been devoting several hours every weekend to cleaning, scraping, sweeping and hauling trash out to get ready for the show. "The place was really full of junk when we got here and the tiles were falling from the ceiling. We have been working really hard and the place should look great by Halloween," explained Bart Herre, LAVA artist and other founding member.

The show, named 'LAVA-rection' will begin at 9:00 and will go 'til after Midnight. The eighties cover band will play first, followed by 'Nirvana' then 'Joan Jett', with headliners bringing out the full fury of 'The Who'. Last but not least will be a set by 'Eminem'. Art will be shown by LAVA Artists, Kristen Shelor, Joe Barlund, Aron Conaway, Hallie Jones, Bart Herre, and others.

LAVA House is currently unable to host guests due to building code issues.
